Cataract Surgery in Athens, GA

What is cataract surgery?

Cataracts are an eye disease that causes your eyes’ lenses to turn cloudy, affecting your vision. Cataract surgery allows Dr. Gadlin to remove a cloudy lens from your eye and replace it with an artificial lens to enable you to see better. It’s a safe, highly effective procedure.

Athens Eye Consultants offers cataract surgery to restore and correct your vision. This is a premium lens surgery that includes multifocal, extended depth of focus, and astigmatism correction.

Why might I need cataract surgery?

Dr. Gadlin will suggest cataract surgery if your cataracts bother you, impair your vision, or hinder your ability to drive and complete other everyday tasks. He’ll also recommend the surgery if you have a cataract that interferes with his ability to examine your eyes or treat another eye problem.

After reviewing your symptoms, lifestyle, and eye health history, Dr. Gadlin lets you know if cataract surgery is right for you. He also completes a thorough dilated eye exam to get an in-depth view of your eyes, vision testing, and eye imaging procedures.

How should I prepare for cataract surgery?

Follow Dr. Gadlin’s instructions to prepare for cataract surgery. You might have to avoid foods and drinks 12 hours before your scheduled procedure and stop taking some medications. Arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home afterward. You might also need to use antibiotic eye drops for a day or two before your surgery.

What should I expect during the procedure?

During cataract surgery, you receive eye drops to dilate your pupil and a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area. You also have the choice of sedation to help you relax.

Dr. Gadlin removes the clouded lens from your eye and usually replaces it with a clear artificial lens. The procedure usually takes an hour or less, and you can go home the same day.

What happens after cataract surgery?

Follow your surgeon’s instructions after undergoing cataract surgery. Your vision should improve over the next few days, but you might feel temporary itching or tenderness. Avoid rubbing your eye during the healing process, and wear an eye shield or patch for a few days.

Take medications or use eye drops as directed by Dr. Gadlin and see him for follow-up appointments. You should be completely healed in about eight weeks, but you might need to wear glasses at least some of the time. After your eye has healed, you can have surgery on the second eye if it’s needed.
